There are many things that go into a family portrait session…or should I say many things that COULD go into a family portrait session.  The key is to decide exactly what it is you want the result to be.  What your is your goal…what are you wanting out of this session?

Are you looking for an amazing vignette to create a focal point in your entry way?

If this is the case and you are wanting a portrait to fit seamlessly into your home…to be that piece of conversational heirloom art then lets do it!  First let us decide what area, what vignette we want to focus on in your home.  Let’s talk about how that room functions…is it a formal quiet area?  is it a more relaxed recreational area? is it a space that you want to insert a bit of humor..or fun? Then we want to discuss the colors of the space…do we want the image to blend in?  do we want it pop out and grab your attention?  From there…is this a portrait for your whole family?  Just the kids?  Maybe just one of the kids.  (I think it is completely fine to have a feature area that only features one child…as long as it is balanced with a feature area of the other in another location…but there is no rule that says they all have to be hanging together all the time to be fair).  Once we have all these questions answered the session will be easy…I will shoot to get that perfect image to go into the perfect space we have created.

In the case above…lets say the family wanted a formal entry way with impact…they wanted to include the entire family and have a more classic feel.  Here are some more images that could have gone into this area.

Maybe that is not the case…maybe you are looking for a story to be told?  Whether it is in an album…or on a wall!  Today I am going to focus on walls.  Let’s take on the family room/gathering room whatever you want to call it.  The space you LIVE it.  You want it to tell the story of your family…while at the same time preserving this time in your lives and these precious little smiles…the smiles with all their baby teeth…those smiles that change so quickly!

For a STORY telling wall we would plan a different kind of session.  We would plan to add some play into the session…so time to capture those real emotions…those genuine smiles…and those genuine pouty faces if we need to!  We would stay in one location so the lighting and the backdrop would flow for the wall story we are creating.  We would mix up the groups…some with mom, some with dad, some together, some alone!

We would create something that could flow like this…
