Photography Gear Tour
In My Bag
It’s time I give you a little Photography Gear Tour! If you haven’t noticed by my photos I like to keep things simple. Not only with the “set” and focusing on baby…but also with my gear. I have literally had all of these pieces for YEARS…and YEARS…besides one add on with the new studio.
(Links in this post are affiliates which I may make money from. These links help me to keep the blog running!)
As you can see I am a Canon girl. It is simply what I started with and have never turned back. As a newborn photographer I spend most of my time during the session working with the baby…I don’t want to have to fuss with equipment too. With that, when I am photographing little ones on the move..I want the focus to be on them…not on constantly switching out equipment.
So here it is… 1 camera (yes I also have a back up) and 4 lenses! That is it! 98% of the time this is all I use!
You can find a majority of the items here. GET THE GEAR
My trusty rusty! This girl is well loved. The Canon 5d Mark III has served me well. I bummed up from the Mark II solely for the extra focal points and it is perfect for framing up images and keeping focus in the right spot.
For Newborns these guys are my go to’s! My Canon 5d Mark III, my trusty 50 mm 1.4, and the 100 mm Macro. These pieces have kept me going for years! Many times I have considered upgrading my 50 mm to the 1.2 but honestly the 1.4 does what I need and I don’t feel I need to spend the money just to have the “fancier” version. The macro I purchased a few years into business and it has really allowed me to expand my gallery with close ups. It is great for still shots (sleeping babies). The macro is not so great with MOVING children as it is slow to focus.
These ladies are my go to for any other shoot! I’ll be honest the 70-200mm IS 2.8L is my favorite baby…but I recently purchased the 24-70mm 2.8 and I like her a lot too. I am a big fan of fixed lenses, but working with mostly kids I want to be able to capture lots of angles really fast…so the zooms are perfect for this. For years I worked with the KIT lens that came with my camera…it was a 24-105 4.0. I NEVER loved it, but didn’t really have a reason to get the 24-70 2.8 because I rarely used the other. When we moved into the new studio I didn’t have as much room to back up in the studio so the 24-70 2.8mm was added to the mix…and she gets lots of use now.
Cards Cards and More Cards! I have used the Sandisk Extreme cards for years now. With the Camera you can use the SD and CD cards both at the same time as “back up” which is nice. I like to use 32gb for full sessions and 16gb for mini sessions. It makes me nervous to put 64gb on to one card in case of failure so I stick to the smaller ones.
Well…and these are the essentials to keep in my bag with me. Gum…of course. Although, don’t chew gum…try to talk to clients…run back and forth to make babies giggle..and try to blow on the duck whistle at the same time! (not that I am speaking from experience). My phone of course…I keep an animal noise app on there…and also like to show clients what their galleries will look like. Listen…I work with kids…and well…hand sanatizer…he he he! (and tissues). Then I try to keep my SQUARE card reader on me as well. Lastly…lip gloss…because I talk way to much and my lips and mouth dry out! 🙂 Plus…gotta try to be cute!
I hope you have enjoyed this Photography Gear Tour! Did you see the Studio Tour last week?
