Go Blue For Colon Cancer

I do find it very interesting March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month…and my birthday Monday.  Along with that, I happen to be shooting a video clip today for the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center.  It is interesting that it is all falling together at the same time.  I think God is trying to tell me something…I think he wants me to be speaking up…speaking out…bringing awareness!

You can read my entire cancer journey story here

I won’t bore you with the whole thing again but I will touch on a few points and why I believe God is speaking to me so I will SPEAK UP!  In the past…I haven’t taken the best care of myself.  Don’t get me wrong…I don’t treat myself poorly…I just don’t listen to my body.  I eat fairly decently (except for my candy problem), I am pretty active, I don’t smoke, barely drink and so on.  But, I don’t take the time to rest…I make excuses for why I can’t take a break, go to the doctors, etc.  I have a history of a bad back with some disc problems…I don’t slow down with my work load, I move furniture, I pick up kids, I don’t stretch and I don’t rest.  So when I started having pain in my lower abdomen I didn’t slow down enough to acknowledge it really.  I didn’t have time to “deal” with it.  The pain came and went, it didn’t last long, it wasn’t as bad as my back pain.  I ignored it.  I remember one time about 9 months before I was diagnosed having quite a bit of blood in my stool…but I didn’t think much of it….it was one time…so I moved on.  When I started seeing small traces of blood in my stool on a regular basis I still didn’t think much of it.  I was working out pretty hard…changed my diet a bit…figured it was from that.  Thankfully I asked about my pain at my yearly exam…and my very smart doctor sent me in for a colonoscopy.  What if I would have continued to ignore it?  I had already gone at least 18 months pushing it off.  What if I would have mentioned it right away?  So many what ifs…but no one can live with WHAT IFS.

That is why I want to spend this month sharing information….spreading awareness about Colon Cancer…hoping that at least ONE person will acknowledge their symptoms, their pain, their what ifs and get screen! #screeningsaves
